Duality

Duality as a concept had a negative connotation. It’s often used as synonymous with “two-faced” or having ill intentions despite good actions. But I argue that duality is not only commonplace but essential for life. For example: I can disagree with someone’s point of view and still care about them as a person. I don’t have to hate them because I hate one action or one opinion.

Japan has a beautiful duality.

Even in the midst of it’s largest city, there are still intentional green spaces that not only provide necessary ecological purposes but also opportunities for those living in the jungle of concrete and steel to experience nature.

I find this duality comforting as a tourist because you can surround yourself with what you need. If you want to explore the hustle and bustle of the city it’s right there. Need an escape into nature, enter a garden and you won’t even realize you’re in a city anymore.

I wish more cities aimed for this level of duality.
