Portugal: Evora

I think Evora is my favorite place in Portugal. It’s much smaller and seems a bit less traveled. You can see most everything in one day, but why, when you can take your time?

Our biggest draw was the bone church. Monks before the 1600’s created it as a statement about how, regardless of your wealth, status, etc., we all end up in the same place in the end.

That being said, they only used the bones of peasants to build this. 🙄

It was pretty surreal. Definitely worth the trip. The cool thing about this place is that it was settled primarily by Moorish people, so the architecture is more simple. But you can see some Islamic touches. I really liked spotting the door handles below.

These are still used as a symbol of good luck here. Elsewhere they are typically a sign that you are Muslim, though.

Perhaps most impressive was the ancient Roman architecture. These are the ruins of what they think were some kind of public bath. It was built around but in the earthquake in the 1700’s the modern structure collapsed leaving the ancient structure still standing. That something so old could withstand time and the elements like that is so amazing.
